Veterans

  • In 2020, there were 6,146 veteran suicides, averaging 16.8 per day.

  • Veterans aged 18-34 had the highest suicide rate in 2020, at 46.1 per 100,000 individuals.

  • Approximately 30% of veterans who died by suicide had a history of substance abuse.

  • From 2001 to 2020, the prevalence of mental health or substance use disorders among veterans using Veterans Health Administration services rose from 27.9% to 41.9%.

  • Firefighters and law enforcement officers are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty.

  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers are 1.39 times more likely to die by suicide compared to the general public.

  • Between 17% and 24% of public safety telecommunicators exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and 24% report symptoms of depression.

  • A study revealed that 25% of female and 23% of male police officers have experienced suicidal thoughts during their careers.
